Medical device patent landscape research
A fixed-price view of public patent activity around your device concept, built by engineers and delivered as business research for you and your counsel.
Why device teams look at patents early
Medical device patent landscape research helps a device team see who is already filing around a technology before the design is fixed and before a fundraise. Device categories can be dense, and a founder who has not looked at the patent record may be surprised by how much has been filed near their idea.
ZKK's Patent Landscape Research is a standalone service at $1,349 for up to 15 identified patents. Both founders are engineers, so the technical documents are read in context. The service is business research. It does not include legal conclusions of any kind.
Typical questions teams bring include which companies hold the most filings near a concept, whether activity is recent or mostly older, and which technical approaches show up repeatedly. The report answers these descriptively, using public records, and shows its sources.
What the report maps
- Competitor filing patterns, including which companies file in your area and where activity is concentrated.
- A technical feature matrix comparing the identified patents side by side, with apparent overlaps and distinctions drawn from public information.
- Ownership and status information, as shown in public records.
- Business and market context that helps you read the patent picture alongside the competitive picture.
- A written report with the patent list, sources, and a documented search approach.
The scope is defined with you during scoping, including the technology area and the competitors you care most about. If the area needs more than 15 patents, we quote a custom scope.
The matrix is the part many teams use most. It lets an engineer and a business lead look at the same table and agree on what each patent appears to describe, without anyone needing to read all of the documents first.
What it does not determine
We do not determine patentability, freedom to operate, infringement, or validity, and we do not provide legal advice or opinions. The report is meant to be taken to qualified patent counsel as organized background. Counsel makes the legal judgments.
The same line applies to regulatory topics. We research public FDA information and standards as described on our expertise page, but we do not issue regulatory opinions or decide classification or clearance outcomes.
Device development is expensive, and discovering a crowded patent area late is costly. Looking early does not remove that risk, but it gives the team time to talk with counsel while the design can still change.
Pairing patent research with market research
Patents show technical activity. They do not show whether a market exists for the product. Many device teams pair the two. The Market + Patent Bundle combines Launchpad market research ($999) with Patent Landscape Research ($1,349) for $2,149, compared with $2,348 if bought separately. Depending on the engagement, the work is delivered as one integrated report or as coordinated deliverables.
For a raise, the Investor Readiness Bundle adds Growth market research and a pitch deck review for $3,199. The competitive side of the market work is described on our page for medical device competitive landscape analysis.
What a finished report looks like
Our independent sample on wrist-worn fall detection includes a summary of publicly available patent information alongside Comprehensive market research. It is a sample built from ZKK's own internal hardware program, not client work. You can open it from the work page.
The general method is described in how to do a patent landscape search, and the general service in patent landscape research.
The report is meant to be read by both the technical and business sides of a team. The feature matrix serves engineers, and the ownership and filing-pattern summaries serve whoever is preparing investor materials or partnership conversations.
How an engagement runs
After a discovery call we send a Statement of Work and an invoice for the 50% deposit. Work starts when both are complete, and the remaining 50% is invoiced on completion. One round of revisions is included, and a mutual NDA is available before you share any design details. See services and pricing or book a discovery call.
